Upper Mustang Trek

The trek will take us to the forbidden land of Upper Mustang. This area is renown for its thousand year old monasteries,  it’s caves and local tribes. Also the  scenic beauty of  it’s different landscapes and mountains.

We will be trekking  to the high desert of the Trans- Himalayan mountain region and we will follow the trail that was used in the 15th century by the salt traders going  from Tibet to India.  The Tibetan language and culture are still widely spoken and followed in this area. Mustang was fully opened for  foreign visitors, with special permits, only in 1992 although Nepal did start to allow limited tourism from 1950. The Monarchy of Mustang came to an end on 7th October, 2008 after Nepal became a Republic. The trekking trail starts at the world’s deepest gorge and follows the Kaligandagi River to Lo-Manthang, the city of Wall. During this trek we will explore the culture, lifestyle, monasteries and the caves which have remained unchanged for thousands of years. Tije festival is the main festival in this area. During this festival, celebrations are carried out for three days and people from all over the Mustang gather in Lo- Manthang. The economy of Mustang is mainly based on tourism, animal husbandry and trade.

Open Trail Treks not only arranges the Upper Mustang Trek but also arranges a trek to the lower part of the Mustang without entering the special permit zone. The Muktinath Jomsom Trek is a 14 day trek and the 20 day trek around the Annapurna i.e. The Annapurna Circuit Trek will also lead you through the various parts of Manang and Mustang.

Accommodation During Trekking
During the trek, we will be staying at local teahouses. These offer accommodation and food served in a dining room which also functions as a social meeting place with other trekkers. All accommodation is on a twin shared basis. A single room is usually available at a little extra cost. The tour guide will arrange the best available accommodation in each village. As we advance to higher and more remote villages it may occasionally be necessary to share a room with more than 2 people. During the treks, most of the bathroom and toilet facilities are shared and toilet can be either a squat or a western toilet.

Meals During Trekking
In Kathmandu we can enjoy authentic Nepalese food such as Thali and Momo at a traditional Nepalese restaurant. For instance the Newari restaurant is a special place serving Newari food (the Newari are the indigenous people of the Kathmandu valley). Newari food is famous and unique. During the trek we will eat traditional Nepalese food as well as more international cuisine (Tibetan, Indian, Italian and continental). Dinner and breakfast will be taken at the teahouse where we spend the night and lunch at one of the trail teahouses.

Had an amazing adventure with Mahesh (and Jakurt (porter)) to Everest Base Camp! Mahesh is a good guide, who is realy open about talking about Nepali culture. He was also open for changing our route as we were walking. His english is good too! I loved that we were in a group of only 5 people ( included guide and porter). Jakurt was the smiliest man I ever met! Thank you for an unforettable experience! Team Raksi <3 Visited September 2015

“Don't look any further for a guide”

★★★★★

Finding a guide for a multi-day trek in the himalayas can be intimidating. My wife and I spent the better part of three days in Kathmandu trying to find a guide for the EBC trek. We chose Mahesh and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made in a year of round-the-world travel. Mahesh is incredibly knowledgeable in the mountains, he is well-versed on local cultures, customs, and history, and overall just a great guy. I had altitude sickness for a few days and he kept us calm and knew exactly how to handle the situation. We were able to take the necessary precautions and eventually made it to base camp. After our trek, we met Mahesh again in Pokhara. 18 months later, we still keep in touch and have recommended him for other friends who have the same sentiments we do. In short, if you are looking for a great overall guide at a fair price, don't look any further. Mahesh is incredible. Visited April 2015
