Overview

Jomsom Muktinath Trek is our classic trek in the Mustang region that includes the world’s deepest gorge of the Kali Gandaki River. The trek takes you to the maximum altitude of 3800m (12,464 ft) and can be accomplished by anybody with a normal level of fitness. This trek gives you an opportunity to explore the hundred years old monasteries, caves, local tribes, and landscapes. This trek will give you an adventure that you will treasure for your whole life as the trek takes you through a diversified landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down the hill, and a panoramic view of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and several other peaks

The trek passes through the entry point of the Upper Mustang Region i.e. Jomsom and Kagbeni. On the way to Muktinath, the trek passed through the windy Tibetan Plateau. Muktinath is the sacred temple where we can find 108 waterfalls. The Jomsom village on the Tibetan Plateau, let you see the beauty of Mustang and have a closer look at the ancient practices still being followed.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrived in Kathmandu(1,310m/4297ft)

When you arrived at Tribhuwan International Airport, a representative from Open Trail will be there holding your group name or leader name. He will drop you at your hotel. After checking in, you can take a rest or visit Open Trail’s office in Thamel or go for some souvenir shopping. In the evening, a welcome dinner is hosted by Open Trail Treks where you will be served with authentic Nepalese cuisine. This will be a great introduction to Nepalese food culture for you.

Day 2 : Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

We will begin our second day with breakfast. After breakfast, we start our guided tour to some of the historical and religious sites of Kathmandu. These places are listed as world heritage sites. In the middle of the tour, we will take you to a local restaurant for lunch.

After we complete our tour we will meet our trekking guide and leader for further discussion and preparation for our following day’s trips.

In the evening, we will go to a local restaurant for dinner

Day 3 : Kathmandu to Pokhara (823m/2,700ft)

After breakfast, we drive towards Pokhara by tourist bus. After 6 to 7 hours of drive, we will reach Pokhara, the city of Lakes and Mountains. This drive offers us a view of farms, villages, rivers, and mountains. We will reach Pokhara in the afternoon. Our hotel is by the side of one of the famous lake called “Fewa”. We can enjoy boating as well as relax in the restaurant by observing the view of the lake.

Day 4 : Fly to Jomsom(2,720m/8,891ft) trek to Kagbeni(2,810m/9,219ft)

We start our day with an early breakfast and then we will transfer to the Pokhara Airport to attain the early morning flight to Jomsom. The half-hour flight will offer a beautiful view of the mountains including two eight thousand meter peaks i.e. Mt.Annapurna and Mt.Dhaulagiri. Upon our arrival in Jomsom, we will meet our crew and head to Kagbeni. Kagbeni is an old village made of mud. We can explore the village rest of our day.

Day 5 : Kagbeni to Muktinath(3,760m/12,335ft)

We will visit the monastery of Jharkot on our way up, which is one of the oldest monasteries in the town. Jharkot village looks even better with buckwheat terraces and apple orchard. After four of our trek, we arrive at Muktinath. Muktinath is the sacred place of both Hindus and Buddhists. For Hindus, it is a “Muktikhsetra” which literally means the place of liberation or salvation. Buddhist people believe that The Lama Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism was meditated in this place on his way to Tibet. After lunch, we will visit the Muktinath temple. There are several Hindus temples and a Buddhist monastery.

Day 6 : Muktinath to Marpha (2,670m/8,760ft): 4 – 5 hrs

Muktinath is a sacred place for Hindus and Buddhist pilgrims. In the morning, we will visit the Bishnu temple and Gupta of Muktinath. While having breakfast, we can see the Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tukuche peak. Today we will treks from Muktinath to Kagbeni passing a beautiful village Jharkot.

Today we follow the trail through the small settlement of Eklebhatti. We start to follow the Kaligandagi river to Jomsom. The strong wind blowing from the opposite side makes trekking very hard for today. Jomsom is the district headquarters of this region. Another one hour trek by the right side of Marsangdi River takes us to Marpha village. Marpha is one of the unique and beautiful villages of these treks. It is also the most famous place in Nepal for Apple. We can enjoy the Apple brandy and apple juice. We can visit the monastery which is located in the top part of the village. From the monastery, we can see a great view of the whole of Marpha.

Total Trekking Time: 4- 5 hours

Day 7 : Marpha to Larjung (2,250m/7,381ft)

From Marpha, we walk through the new route. Today we will pass the unique and traditional ethnic Thakali Villages, Apple orchard, and Pine forest. The magical scenery of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri, and Annapurna I will delight us in this trek. The trail leads us through the Kali Gandaki River. Finally, we arrive at larjung, where we will spend overnight.

Total Trekking Time: 5- 6 hours

Day 8 : Larjung to Ghasa(2,010m/6,594ft)

We trek following the Kali Gandaki river to Kalopani Village. Kalopani is a beautiful village habituated by the Thakali people. Our trekking follows gentle downhill through the forest of Pine to Ghasa. From Ghasa Mustang District end and Magdi district start.

Overnight at Ghasa.

Day 9 : Ghasa to Tatopani(1190m/3,872ft) and go for hot spring

We verify our permits here at the Check Post and then continue our trek passing the Kaligandagi River. As we are at the power elevation, the vegetation is thicker and the forest is subtropical. We continue opposite Rupse Chhahara (waterfall) passing some small settlement. We again cross the suspension bridge over the Kali Gandaki River at Dana. We pass by lots of big and small settlements. Thus you can explore the life of local peoples in these settlements. Finally, we end our treks for today at Tatopani. After some rest, we can go to a natural hot spring for a bath.

Total Trekking Time: 5 hours

Day 10 : Tatopani to Shikha(1,935m/6,348ft)

During today’s trek, we observe the lifestyle of people in the hill region of Nepal which can be a great introduction to hilly culture and lifestyle. We follow the trail which ascends gradually passing through the villages, rice and maize terraces, and a small forest. We spend the night at Sikha.

Total Trekking Time: 7-8 hours

Day 11 : Shikha to Ghorepani (2,850m/9,350ft)

After finish breakfast, our trekking continues to ascend uphill through some small settlement and forest of Rhododendron to the Ghorepani. Ghorepani is a beautiful town inhabitant by the Magar people. Most of the household run guesthouse here. Overnight at Ghorepani.

Day 12 : Ghorepani to Tikhedhunga(1,540m/5,052ft)

Today we will start early with a 45-minute walk following steep climbing stairs guided by headlights. As we trek higher there will be an eerie feeling as the snow-capped mountains glow through the forest trees. Once you reach the top you will be rewarded with the warmth of the morning sun and incredible views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Fishtail. From here we will trek back for a warm breakfast in Ghorepani before beginning our trek to Tikhedunga. The first part of our trekking will be downhill through the forest Rhododendron. Our descending continue passing through the settlement of Ullari to Tikhedhunga. Overnight at Tikhe Dhunga.

Day 13 : Tikhedhunga to Pokhara(820m/2690ft)

Today is the last day of our trekking. We will trek from Tikhedhunga to Nayapul and then drive back. The treks follow gentle downhill passing through the settlement to Birethanti. As we arrive at we have to exit our permit, from here on it takes only half an hour to get back to Nayapul, At Nayapul, our trekking by foot will end and we will drive for an hour and a half to get back to Pokhara.

Day 14 : Pokhara to Kathmandu(1,310m/4297ft)

Today we will return back to Kathmandu. The drive will be of six to seven hours by the side of Trisuli and Marsangdi River. This drive offers an amazing view of the rice terraces village and the landscape of Nepal. You can fly back as well which will only take half an hour. If you want to fly, the extra costs will be added. In the evening, there will be a farewell dinner where we will analyze the overall trekking and our services. After we arrived in Kathmandu, we will be dropped off at the hotel. After taking nap, you can walk around the shops for small souvenirs shopping. In the evening, we will have a farewell dinner hosted by Open Trail Treks at the traditional Nepalese restaurant with the unique Nepalese music and dance.

Drive: 6-7 hours

Day 15 : Farewell

Today is the last day of your adventure. If you want we can have breakfast together. After breakfast, if you have time from your flight, you can go for some shopping or for sightseeing. If you want to go sightseeing then inform us a day earlier so that we can arrange the necessary arrangements for you.

In the end, a representative from Open Trail Treks will drop you at the airport 3 hours before your flight.
